The son of former Honduran President, Porfirio Lobo, was arrested Wednesday night in Haiti during an anti-drug operation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Haitian authorities.
The news, according to the Associated Press, was confirmed Thursday by the former president and the Honduran government.
After his arrest, Fabio Lobo, 43, was taken to New York to appear before a judge, according to a statement by the Honduran government. Lobo was arrested by Haitian authorities, with support from the DEA.
Porfirio Lobo, said Thursday in an interview with the Honduran press, he was faced with a situation that no parent would ever want to face.
"I can not say he's guilty, I can not say heis not," said Lobo, adding that he hopes his son can prove his innocence. As a father, he said, he is very wrong.
Porfirio Lobo has served as president of Honduras from 2010 to 2014. He was elected after a coup that toppled Manuel Zelaya in 2009.
