Hundreds of high school students from Lycée Duvivier, in the populous neighborhood of Cite Soleil, on Wednesday February 28, took to the streets to demand the return of teachers on strike for weeks due to months of salary arrears.

Students, using school benches and stones erected barricades and blocked the major Route 9 highway for several hours.

The Haitian National Police (PNH) was quickly dispatched to disperse the large protest resulting in clashes between the high school students and law enforcement agents which caused many injuries. Many students were severely beaten and some were taken to nearby hospital.

Since the beginning of this week hundreds of high school students from across the country in cities such as Cap Haitian, Port-de-Paix, jean Rabel, Artibonite and Petit Goave, took to the streets in protest demanding the return of teachers into the classrooms.

In a statement released Wednesday, the Ministry of National Education called on the teacher to be “calm” and “conscious” pointing out that the first victims are always the students. The Ministry of National Education therefore urges teachers to remain patient until the case, which is currently being processed at the state level, is finally completed.
