A man died earlier  Thursday in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, during a mass protest called by the opposition against the government  and corruption.

The man was identified Pierre Hubert, who was hit by a gunshot in circumstances under investigation.

Hundreds of people took to the streets Thursdday to protest against the government and in repudiation of corruption especially in the management of Petrocaribe funds between 2008 and 2016.

Moise Jean-Charles (not related to president Jovenel Moise), of the opposition Platform of the Sons of Dessalines, accused the police officer of the death of the man who, he said in statements to the press, "fired at the march despite the fact that it was "peaceful."

"We are on the streets (...) and we will continue to be on the streets until (the president) Jovenel Moise respects the law and there is justice for the country."

The former presidential candidate accused Moise and "his friends" of the previous government of Michel Martelly of diverting funds from Petrocaribe, the agreement by which Venezuela supplies soft oil to several Caribbean countries.
