As Hurricane Matthew moves away from Haiti onward to the United States, officials and rescue teams on the ground are starting to get a clearer picture of the immensity of the catastrophe left behind by the devastating effects of the storm.

The latest update on the human toll: 23 confirmed dead and three missing; these figures are expected to continue rising significantly as the number of victims in the Grande Anse remains unknown. The only bridge that connected the grande anse to the rest of the country was washed away by the monstrous river.

American rescue teams and military personnels will start arriving in Haiti tomorrow
to assist relief operations and to assess the extent of the damages.
