The only Haitian-American member of the United States Congress, Utah Republican Rep. Mia Love, met with President Trump Tuesday morning amid fallout from the president's reported use of the phrase "shithole countries" to describe Haiti, El Salvador, and some African nations during a meeting with lawmakers last Thursday.

The office of the congresswoman who had already condemned the reported comment of the President as "elitist, divisive and unkind", released the following statement about the meeting:

Breaking News: GOP Utah Rep. Haitian American Mia Love, asks Trump to apologize for shithole comment regarding Haiti

"This morning, Congresswoman Mia Love met with President Donald J. Trump at the White House. The two leaders discussed the importance of reaching a bipartisan agreement on immigration.  During the 30-minute meeting, they touched on a range of topics relating to immigration reform.

“This morning’s meeting was substantive and productive,” Congresswoman Love said. “We discussed the importance and urgency of finding a solution for DACA recipients, on enhancing border security, and on implementing reforms to ensure our nation continues to attract the world’s top talent, regardless of race.  I will work with both parties in Congress as well as with the White House to make sure that we reach an agreement.”

Rep. Love added, “I believe Congress can solve the vast majority of the immigration issues the nation faces.  There is already agreement on many important aspects. We need to fight against those who have a vested interest in keeping immigration a wedge issue.  This  has gone unaddressed for far too long.   Let’s have a real conversation, so Congress can finish the important work we were elected to do.”
