Haiti on Tuesday April 9th, launched an nationwide campaign against diphtheria, after three deaths were caused so far this year by the disease. The large scale vaccination campaign aims to protect more than a million people, mostly children, health authorities said.

Until March of this year, some 60 probable cases of diphtheria were identified, of which 20 were confirmed, 60% of them women.

A budget of 169 million gourdes or $2.6 millions was allocated by the Ministry of Public Health for the day campaign, excluding the costs of the doses.

The reappearance of the disease in this Caribbean country, of 12 million inhabitants, caused panic both in Haiti in the neighboring Dominican Republic.

Dominican authorities declared an epidemiological alert last month after a 4-year-old Haitian boy died shortly after arriving in Dominican territory, apparently due to the disease.

However, the Dominican authorities have ruled that diphtheria cases are currently registered only in the neighboring country.
