Technical considerations are being discussed in relation to the ban on imports of fruits and vegetables from the Dominican Republic, said the Secretary of State for Animal Production, Michel Chancy, AlterPresse this Monday, March 23 .

The public will be informed of the final decision in due course, informed Chancy, indicating that up to now, a report of the experts is expected.

A temporary ban on imports of fruit and vegetables from the Dominican Republic was announced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR), in a press release dated March 20 2015.

This ban was taken to avoid contamination of the products on the territory of Haiti by the Mediterranean fruit fly, which has already invaded the Punta Cana region of the Dominican Republic, the ministry said.

This provision was adopted following a first report of experts on the issue, said Chancy.

Haitian and Dominican specialists of health protection services, supported international assistance continue to assess the situation for the release of a second report to determine what should be taken as another measure.

The Ministry informed "any trader, any importer, any producer and all the general population of the temporary ban on the importation of a variety of fruits and vegetables from the Dominican Republic," reads the press release .

In early June 2013, a ban on poultry products from the Dominican Republic has been taken by the Haitian government because of the existence of very acute respiratory infection outbreaks in neighboring countries.

This ban import of eggs had not been fully respected in several border regions, including Toman, a town not far from Ganthier Fund-Parisien (West Department).
